Step one: Get out the measuring tape
Your dining table has to fit in your dining space, so make sure you measure both the space and the table carefully. Not only do you have to account for the space taken up by the table, you also need space around it. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least three feet's clearance around the table for seating, as well as comfortable access.
If you want to visualise how a table will feel in a certain space, try using masking tape to block out the length and width of the table on the floor and stand back.
Step two: Consider the shape of your dining space
Rectangular dining tables may be the most common, but don't discount other shapes, as they, too, come with advantages.
If you're buying a dining table for a tight space, a round or oval table could well be the best option. By cutting off the corners, they gain that extra bit of room, but they still have a great surface area. They're also excellent for dinner parties, as there's no head of the table, making it easier to have great dinner-table conversations.
Step three: Don't forget about the table supports
The base of a table - legs, pedestal or trestle - doesn't just affect the look and style; it also has an effect on how many people you can seat at the table. It's always a good idea to sit down at a table you're considering to see if there's enough space for your knees.
If you want to entertain, you'll also want to check how many extra people you can fit in - we've all been the unlucky dinner guest who got the chair by the table leg, and choosing a table with a pedestal or trestle helps prevent that.
Step four: Match the materials to your style
There are several factors to be considered when you're choosing which materials you want for your dining table. You want something that will work with your other items to create a harmonious home, but you shouldn't forget about the care needed for your table.
Solid wood, for example, may show scratches and wear, but it also very easy to repair, and it ages beautifully.
Marble, meanwhile, is very durable, and will certainly add oomph, but marble tables are very heavy, so it's a good idea to take that into account if you're planning a house move in the near future.
Finally, glass offers a great deal of versatility as the material can open up a space and is far easier to move around - and it is delightfully easy to clean.
Step five: Think of how you use your dining table
Does the whole family convene at the dining table several times a day? If so, go for something sturdy and big. And if you regularly use the table for purposes other than dining - working from home, for example - don't forget to factor that into your choice. On the other hand, if you use your dining table less frequently, you can go for all the decoration you want.
Finally, you should consider how often you entertain. In cases where space is limited, but you're keen to have a dinner party or two, consider an extending table.
